As K-pop juggernaut BTS enters a new era following the release of its latest album, ARIRANG, scholars from around the world will gather in Korea to examine the group's cultural influence through fandom, technology, politics and globalization. The fifth BTS: A Global Interdisciplinary Conference will take place Thursday and Friday at the International Convention Center of Jeonbuk National University, under the theme The Next Generation Hallyu & BTS.

Hallyu refers to the Korean wave, a term coined in 1999 by Song Joon-seok, a professor at Yonsei University. The conference will bring together 50 presenters from 10 countries, including Korea, the United States, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mongolia, the Czech Republic, Canada, Australia and Japan. This year's event is expected to surpass last year's attendance of over 500 participants.

  • The conference will delve into the impact of BTS on K-pop as a whole, exploring how its global success has influenced the music industry. The group's ability to transcend cultural boundaries through their inclusive lyrics and universal themes has paved the way for other Korean artists to break into the international market.
  • One of the key speakers at the conference will be Lee Ji-haeng, professor of K-entertainment at Jeonbuk National University, who will deliver the keynote address on The Cultural Significance of BTS in the Context of Hallyu. His presentation will explore how BTS has contributed to the growth and diversification of the Korean wave.
  • The conference will also examine the role of technology in spreading K-pop globally. With the rise of social media platforms, music streaming services, and online fan communities, K-pop has become more accessible than ever before.
  • Furthermore, the event will discuss the intersection of politics and pop culture. BTS's lyrics often touch on themes of self-empowerment, love, and acceptance, which have resonated with fans worldwide. However, some critics argue that the group's message can be seen as a form of cultural propaganda, promoting Korean values and ideology to global audiences.
  • Moreover, the conference will address the issue of globalization and its impact on K-pop. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, K-pop has become a symbol of cultural exchange and understanding between East and West.
  • The event is co-organized by Jeonbuk National University's Namwon Glocal Campus Administration, Center for Glocal University Project, department of K-entertainment and Big Movement. This partnership highlights the growing recognition of K-pop as a significant contributor to Korea's cultural soft power.

As the conference explores the future of Hallyu and BTS, it is clear that their influence will only continue to grow. With their music, message, and global fan base, BTS has become an ambassador for Korean culture, inspiring a new generation of fans around the world.

The success of this year's conference will likely have a significant impact on the global K-pop industry. It may lead to increased collaborations between international artists and K-pop labels, as well as more opportunities for Korean artists to break into the global market.
